In the anime, it is portrayed that he and his Yoko form have different personalities. Later on in the series, he is able to access this form of himself and its powers without the age regression technique of Uraurashima (through Suzuka) and adopt his personality traits to a higher degree. After Yusuke's defeat at the hands of Sensui, Kurama seems to take on his Yoko form, though he states it is just a change in physical appearance, due to his exposure to substantial amounts of demon energy, a product of the tunnel's completion. He enjoys toying with his enemies, as shown in the semi-final rounds of the Dark Tournament, and in his fight against Karasu.

For the remainder of the series, he often wears a light-colored Chinese-style battle outfit. He stopped wearing it midway through the second season (presumably because it was ruined in his fights against the first two members of Team Masho). Towards the end of a sash tied around his waist. Takeuchi, who was currently unemployed and depressed following the finale of Sailor Moon, started to collaborate with Togashi as an assistant on Hunter x Hunter, working on backgrounds until younger, upcoming artists for Shonen Jump replaced her. While Takeuchi helped Togashi get his personal life together, he helped her get back on her feet career-wise. She immediately tried to help him take better care of himself. When Takeuchi got to visit Togashi in private, she seemed stunned by his living condition, with his apartment being very messy and his diet consisting primarily of pudding. From there, mutual friends like Megumi Ogata (voice actress of Sailor Uranus, Kurama, and Shinji Ikari) would help the two get to know one another.
